The Time Travelers Wife - Audrey Niffenegger

Mark Haddon

"Wonky, sexy, incredible"

The Times

It is easy to criticize something bad, slightly harder to describe something that is good, and almost impossible to find the words to praise something excellent.
Having read 'The Time Travelers Wife' I find myself in the latter situation. This book is absolutely brilliant!

The plot of the book is so simple - it is about the relationship of Henry and Clare and their life together. What brings the unique aspect to the book is the fact that Henry is a time-traveler! Randomly plucked from the present day and displaced somewhere in his past or future, Henry's life is far from normal. Throughout all of the uncertainty of his life, Clare is the one thing that he lives for, the thing which grounds him and eventually brings him back to the present. The book leads the reader through their desperate struggles to try and live a normal life together, fighting against something that tries to keep them apart.

It takes a few chapters to get used to the bizarre chronology of the narrative. Henry meets Clare when he is 28 and she is 20. Clare meets Henry when she is 6 and he is 36. The story continues thus. It is completely gripping and from a mere few pages in I was unable to put it down. The story is both humorous and sad. The characters come to life on the pages and it is difficult not to feel the joy and heartache they suffer; it was very easy to relate to all the characters and the relationships between them.

I was saddened to reach the end of this novel and whilst it may sound a tad extreme, I felt a real need for a moment for quiet reflection before being able to put the story to rest in my head.

Two words for it.
