The Reader by Bernhard Schlink

"The Reader is an exemplary piece of filmmaking, superbly acted by Kate Winslet, David Kross and Ralph Fiennes, beautifully lit by two of Britain's finest cinematographers (Roger Deakins and Chris Menges) and sensitively directed by Stephen Daldry from a screenplay by David Hare."

Philip French, The Observer, Sunday 4th January 2009

Having just read the book I was intrigued to see what I would make of the film. This  can be a disappointment when you have read a book which you have enjoyed.

Anyhow, I was not disappointed. The film followed the story of the book very closely and I felt Kate Winslet played the roll of Hanna Schmitz very well. David Kross plays the youth Micheal Berg who falls in love with the older Hanna. He is desparately hurt when he feels that she has abandoned him and this has repercussions in the way he relates to women for the rest of his life.

This is a powerful film and worth seeing on so many different levels.
